The Oceanbed Sessions #1
James Eric & Erin Vogel Cover “Yankee Hotel Foxtrot”
DESCRIPTION: So I had this idea after waking up from a really surreal dream. It may totally flop, and maybe no one will care at all about this endeavor, but I thought of live audio/video recording in a rather unconventional way. I’ve been doing it solo using Depeche Mode’s “Violator” as a starting point. But I wanted to involve others. Basically, people come to my abode in Elgin, and record a favorite album of theirs in its entirety while sitting on my comfy bed. (Or they can record an EP… or just a few favorite songs from an album that means a lot to them). The basic idea is to strip down a favorite record to just melody, instrument, and voice. The set has to be under 40 minutes, no exceptions - so I can split it into two 20 minute segments when uploaded. So obviously, I chose one of the most influential records in my life, and this session features one of my favorite female singers I’ve recently befriended, Erin Vogel, who is also a huge Wilco fan. She had no idea what she was getting into… no rehearsal… lyrics sheets sitting on a music stand… and my one-time run-through of the chords. The only song she knew well was track one, and the only song I knew really well was the very last song! We sang the entire record while being videotaped. The audio is available as a .zip file too! So there are flaws aplenty, but we laugh them off. Imperfections are acceptable!
Here’s the first in a series of “The Oceanbed Sessions” from Grey Noise Media. These will more than likely be done once a month due to schedule restrictions in September. The following is a live, unrehearsed re-interpretation of Wilco’s “Yankee Hotel Foxtrot” in its entirety. The Oceanbed is a bedroom studio space, where live video/audio is captured simultaneously by any and all musicians visiting Elgin, IL. So come visit, sit on my bed, and play some songs which I will archive both audio and video! Grey Noise Media is proud to present this first edition of ‘live full-length album covers.’ Part 1 contains tracks 1-5 from YHF, Part 2 contains tracks 6-11, and there’s also some silly outtakes for your amusement.
